Definitive Woody -- The Best of Allen

By Susan Daly

Traditional wisdom has it that Allen's movies were at their best when he tempered his high intelligence with comedy. His earliest work (eg 'Take the Money and 'Run', 1969; 'Bananas', 1971; 'Sleeper', 1973) veered towards streams of one-liners and slapstick. It was not until the late '70s and '80s that he hit his stride with more sophisticated comedy and brilliant characterisation...n ANNIE HALL (1977): It is still hailed as one of the greatest romantic comedies of all time, pictured right, with real chemistry between Diane Keaton's ditsy singer Annie and Woody's neurotic comedian Alvy. It juggles beautifully drawn characters with use of animation, split-screens and flashback. And Diane Keaton's masculine wardrobe rocked.

Dead Wood -- The Worst of Allen

By Susan Daly

n scoop (2006): This was the second of Allen's recent films to be filmed in England --- the other was 'Match Point' -- but it didn't even get a theatrical release there. Fluffy, farcical and implausible, 'The Washington Post' called it "the worst movie Woody Allen has ever made".
