Let us not be bewitched by this cultural fanaticism

The news that Paddy Barnes had won a bronze medal in Beijing was the lead item on the RTE radio lunchtime news. Which is how it should be.

The sun has set on those tired old summer schools

A large wellington boot, sprayed silver, used to lie on top of a filing cabinet in a newsroom where I worked. It lay there for more than five years, untouched, unloved, and unvalued. It had a little card attached to it, announcing that it had been presented to a member of the news features staff who had won a wellington-throwing competition at a particular summer school in the west of Ireland. But its owner had long emigrated to Canada, his wellie-throwing prowess a distant memory. So much for our ancient scholarship.

Traveller issues reflect a wider society malaise

Eilis O'Hanlon's comments in relation to Travellers last week, (Sunday Independent, August 17) are heard time and time again and are only used to reinforce negative stereotypes about Travellers and do not contribute to the national debate on Traveller issues any more.
